How to Reduce Dust at Home

Wiping down surfaces to remove household dust

Dust settles on tables, window sills and shelves almost as soon as you’ve finished cleaning — and that’s normal. You can’t get rid of it completely, but you can noticeably reduce how much there is.

What actually helps

Smooth surfaces and floors are easy to keep clean with a damp wipe. Upholstered furniture, curtains and rugs are trickier — they trap not just dust but dust mites too, which can trigger allergies.

A regular vacuum cleaner without a good filter often just stirs dust into the air instead of removing it. Regular damp-cleaning of surfaces and floors, especially near upholstered furniture and rugs, works more reliably.

A monthly general clean covers what doesn’t get noticed day to day — cupboards, shelves, the gaps behind radiators. Curtains deserve special attention too — they attract more dust than almost anything else.

When to bring in professional cleaning

If you don’t have time to keep on top of it yourself, maintenance cleaning or general cleaning covers exactly the areas that usually get missed — and dust will show up noticeably less often.
